Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 - 1938)

Berlin, in Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's days - on the brink of World War I - was the ultimate metropolis: wealth and elegance but also prostitution and criminality pervaded the capital. Kirchner captures the typical atmosphere at Potsdamer Platz and in Friedrichstrasse in this painting of 'Two Women in the Street'. Hasty, short brushstrokes reflect with memorable immediacy the hectic rhythm of city life. ___
