Joseph Beuys (1921 - 1986)
„Palazzo Regale“ - royal palace or regal palace - is Beuys' last large-scale installation. He created it just four weeks before his death, for a temporary exhibition in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. It came to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in 1991. All the objects collected together in Palazzo Regale are of significance within Beuys' œuvre as a whole, either having been used in earlier Actions and works or as memorabilia which had a particular meaning in his own life history. In „Palazzo Regale“ Beuys took stock of his life and his art. And for Beuys, the palace „that we should first conquer and then inhabit in a fitting manner . . . is the human mind, our own mind“. ___
