The work 1000 years by the young Belgian artist Kris Martin is associated with an unusual announcement: In one thousand years, the massive metal ball will purportedly self-destruct by means of a chemical additive that was added to it during its production. The object will thus lose its status as a work of art. With his work, Kris Martin undermines and questions the classical claim of the artist to create a durable good with a work of art. At the same time, the reference to a period of one thousand years calls for a reflection on temporal categories. The artist thus inevitably confronts the question of what position one takes within the limited, yet seemingly infinite continuum of time. The sculpture was acquired by the Friends in 2010.
