For “Das Reich” Henrike Naumann uses household furniture as sculptural material and makes connections between society and private life visible. The set has its point of departure in Naumann’s 2017 exhibition in the banquet hall of Berlin’s Kronprinzenpalais, where representatives of West and East Germany signed the Unification Treaty on August 31, 1990. With this, the Federal Republic of Germany ceased to exist for the so-called Reichsbürger. In the video collage, Naumann also uses the pseudo-Germanic visual rhetoric of the New Right and mixes it with documentary footage from German-German history. Naumann problematizes the subversive effect of right-wing groups’ image logic through defamiliarizing effects and cross-fades.
