Dayanita Singh’s “Museum of Furniture” brings together 94 black-and-white photographs of public and private interiors. Singh’s photographs tenderly portray furniture and interiors fulfilling their functional roles. The framed photographs are stored and presented in a handcrafted teak display. The movable structure with hinged doors and shelves is a museum, an archive, and an architecture at once. Singh’s museum within a museum allows for a flexible presentation of her photographic work. While some photographs remain concealed on the shelves, they linger as a subtle presence, ready for rotation. The inception of the “Museum of Furniture” stems from Singh’s expansive endeavor, the “Museum of Chance.”
